Contour machines – Dual sided probe allows thread profile measurement. Major, Minor, PD ( calculated from the midline of the apex’s), root radius, pitch lead. This assumes a dual direction tracer.

This contour measuring instrument is designed to support “easy to use” and “speedy”
measurements.

Contour measurement systems, such as Mitutoyo Formtracer, analyze threads by scanning the profile with a stylus to automatically determine flank angles, pitch, root radii, and diameters (major, minor, pitch). A double-sided stylus traces the thread, generating 2D data for precise, automated evaluation of both external and internal thread

Steps for Measuring Threads

Alignment: The part is placed on the measuring table, and the stylus is positioned for the first measurement.
Scanning: The stylus traces the thread profile, maintaining constant measuring force.
Analysis: The software (e.g., FORMTRACEPAK) takes the 2D contour data and calculates geometric features based on user-defined thread areas.
Reporting: Results are displayed instantly, often with visual representations of the deviations.
