EDU-460: NIMS Inspector Credential Preparation

Overview

This educator‑focused course is designed for anyone preparing to earn the NIMS Inspector Credential. The course provides targeted preparation through guided review of inspection concepts, GD&T interpretation, and inspection decision‑making aligned to the published NIMS Inspector Body of Knowledge.

This class is not a GD&T fundamentals course and does not replace hands‑on inspection training. Instead, it serves as a capstone experience that helps experienced instructors align their inspection knowledge and judgment with the expectations of the NIMS Inspector assessment.

Through facilitated discussion and application‑based examples, participants will strengthen their ability to select appropriate inspection methods, interpret requirement intent, and evaluate inspection scenarios commonly represented on the credential exam.

Who Should Attend

This course is intended for:

  • Faculty responsible for inspecting and validating NIMS performance projects
  • Manufacturing instructors
  • Technical educators
  • NIMS evaluators

Participants are expected to already have experience with dimensional inspection tools, print reading, and GD&T interpretation.

Recommended Prerequisites

While not required, prior completion of the following courses is strongly recommended:

  • EDU-G410: Print Reading and Tolerances
  • EDU‑104: Introduction to Dimensional Metrology Hand Tools IV
  • EDU‑450: GD&T Applied Inspection, which includes EDU-G415: GD&T Fundamentals

This course is scheduled as a continuation of EDU‑450 and is best taken as part of the full instructional sequence.

What You’ll Learn

Participants will:

  • Reinforce inspection concepts within the NIMS Inspector Body of Knowledge
  • Clarify datum reference frame intent, datum simulation, and degrees of freedom
  • Review inspection strategies for position, profile, flatness, orientation, and size verification
  • Strengthen understanding of material condition modifiers and their impact on inspection decisions
  • Evaluate appropriate tool selection based on tolerance type, tolerance size, and inspection intent
  • Discuss common areas of confusion and misinterpretation encountered by instructors taking the credential
  • Build confidence in inspection judgment and evaluator responsibility

This course emphasizes how inspection decisions are evaluated, not memorization of answers.
